Abdullah ibn Amr reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “What will occur in my nation is what has occurred during the time of the children of Israel; they will be followed step-by-step until if one of them were to openly fornicate with his mother, then someone from my nation would do likewise. Verily, the children of Israel were split into seventy-two sects and my nation will split into seventy-three sects, all of them are in the Hellfire except one.” They said, “Who are they, O Messenger of Allah?” He said, “Those who follow me and my companions.”
